Upscayl is an open-source desktop app that enlarges small images and restores clarity: old ecommerce photos, screenshots, family pictures and downloaded assets. All processing is local, so images never leave the machine; a modest GPU will be slower. It accepts a whole folder, with a chosen scale and model and an output directory, and shows a before-and-after comparison. Remember that new detail is inferred, not original; faces and text edges still need a visual check.
What it does
- Desktop app with installers for major systems
- All processing local; images stay on the machine
- Folder batch processing with one output directory
- Several upscaling approaches to match image type
- Preview comparison between original and result
Who it is for
- One small image must reach print or large-screen size
- A batch of old assets needs one resolution upgrade
- Client or private images cannot go to an online service
- Compare upscaling models on the same image
How to get started
- Install the right build and test one crop of a real image
- Decide scale and model before queueing the folder
- Check faces and text at display size; fall back to another model if needed
