Text Diff
Compare two texts line by line with highlighted differences
About this tool
The text diff tool (also called a diff checker) finds the differences between two blocks of text, a task that comes up in code review, document revision and data reconciliation.
- Line by line: compare texts row by row and mark every difference precisely
- Highlighted changes: additions get a green background, deletions a red one
- Side by side: original and revised text sit in two columns for easy reading
- Summary counts: see how many lines were added, removed or changed
When to use it
- Code review: see what changed between two versions and jump straight to the edits
- Document revision: inspect wording changes between drafts
- Data checks: compare two data files for differences
- Configuration: diff two config files
Everything runs in the browser and the text is never uploaded.
Diff tips
- Granularity: comparison is per line, so any character change marks the whole line
- Green rows: lines only present on the right
- Red rows: lines only present on the left
- Best practice: normalize line endings to \n first, otherwise different endings look like real changes
