Ganzhi Calendar

Convert a Gregorian date into the sexagenary year, month, day and hour pillars plus the zodiac animal

About this tool

The Ganzhi calendar converts a Gregorian date into the traditional sexagenary cycle:

  • Year pillar: the stem-and-branch year, such as a jiazi year, with its zodiac animal
  • Month pillar: the sexagenary month, bounded by solar terms
  • Day pillar: the sexagenary day within the 60-day cycle
  • Hour pillar: the double-hour stem and branch for a given time
  • Four pillars: year, month, day and hour output together

When to use it

  • Four Pillars analysis: working out the pillars of a birth date and time
  • Traditional culture research: understanding the sexagenary calendar
  • Zodiac lookup: finding the animal for a birth year
  • Almanac checks: seeing the stems and branches for a particular date

Background

  • Ten heavenly stems: jia, yi, bing, ding, wu, ji, geng, xin, ren and gui
  • Twelve earthly branches: zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu and hai
  • Sixty-year cycle: the stems and branches pair up and repeat every 60 years
  • Zodiac pairs: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig follow the branches in order
